Old 97's with Lizzie No

The thirteenth studio album from Old 97’s, American Primitive arose from what vocalist/guitarist Rhett Miller refers to as a “de-evolution” of the legendary Dallas-bred band. “As much as I want us to calm down and grow up, the songs that felt right for this record were mostly big and loud and brutal and dirty,” says Miller, whose bandmates include bassist Murry Hammond, guitarist Ken Bethea, and drummer Philip Peeples. Arriving just months before the 30th anniversary of Hitchhike to Rhome—a powerhouse debut that played a vital part in pioneering the alt-country genre—the result is a gloriously rowdy body of work, revealing a veteran band more attuned than ever to the raw and reckless energy of truly timeless rock-and-roll.

With its title lifted from a bit of fictional art criticism in Stephen King’s psych-horror novel Duma Key, American Primitive merges its unvarnished sound with the punchy yet poignant storytelling signature to Old 97’s, radiating a rambunctious joy even as Miller’s lyrics contend with complex questions of love and mental illness and the routinely daunting state of the world. Produced by Tucker Martine (My Morning Jacket, The Decemberists, Neko Case) and featuring iconic guest musicians like Peter Buck of R.E.M. and Scott McCaughey of The Young Fresh Fellows and The Minus 5, the album took shape in a series of deliberately whirlwind sessions at Flora Studio in Portland, Oregon. “This was the first record we’ve ever done with zero pre-production,” Miller points out. “It’s us working completely on instinct, leaning on 30 years of playing together to come up with something on the fly rather than overthinking any of our choices.”

Kicking off with the frenzied riffs and restless grooves of “Falling Down,” American Primitive opens on a lyric encapsulating the album’s snarling joie de vivre: “You’ve got to dance like the world is falling down around you, because it is.” Next, on “Somebody,” Old 97’s deliver a thumping punkabilly anthem channeling both desire and doom. “That song came from looking back over my relationship history and acknowledging that I spent a long time as something of a serial monogamist,” says Miller. “As a young man I was in love with the idea of being in love, and I wanted ‘Somebody’ to speak to the hopelessness of exiting a very intense relationship and knowing you’re just going to rush right into the next one.” From there, American Primitive bursts into the breakneck urgency of its title track, a gorgeous entangling of poetic observation and feverishly expressed longing. “I was sitting on the balcony of a hotel in Peachtree, Georgia, watching the sun setting over the forest and trying to identify the trees, and I started writing what began as meditation on nature but eventually turned into a song about missing someone,” Miller recalls. “I wound up taking inspiration from that phrase in the Stephen King novel, which felt like a perfect description for our band and how primitive and unstudied we are.”

STICK MEN featuring Tony Levin, Pat Mastelotto and Markus Reuter

with John Ferrara

Tony Levin and Pat Mastelotto, the powerhouse bass and drums of the group King Crimson for a few decades, bring that tradition to all their playing. Levin plays the Chapman Stick, from which the band takes its name. Having bass and guitar strings, the Chapman Stick functions at times like two instruments. Markus Reuter plays his self-designed touch style guitar – again covering much more ground than a guitar or a bass. And Mastelotto’s drumming encompasses not just the acoustic kit, but a unique electronic setup too, allowing him to add loops, samples, percussion, and more. Members of STICK MEN have recorded on albums that sold over 100 million records worldwide and all 4 individual members have played collectively in many different projects in the past 5 decades in over 90 countries worldwide.

When their instrumental prowess earned them a vast following on social media, childhood friends turned all-star act Shadowgrass found sudden success. But as a young band, the expectations that went along with a large audience proved daunting. “We felt a lot of pressure to make something uniquely us, because we had such a big following, and we felt that they deserved more than what we had given them as of yet.” explains the band. The group dug deep into their own musicality, and tried to block out the noise for their sophomore release All That Will (release date: Oct 4, 2024). “It turned out that dropping those self-imposed expectations and just writing/making music for our own enjoyment was the key to finding our collective voice and making a record we are all proud of.”

Shadowgrass began in 2014 when Clay Russell (Banjo), Luke Morris (Mandolin), Kyser George (Guitar) were jamming at the Grayson County Fiddler’s Convention in Elk Creek, VA. Sometime before their first real show, the name Shadowgrass was suggested simply because they thought it sounded “cool”. Kyser, Clay, and Luke were 9, 13, and 14 years old at the time. Now in their early twenties, their influences and listening habits have changed drastically, but the group has always grown in the same direction musically. They have welcomed fiddle player Madison Morris, who also lends vocals and songwriting prowess, and bass player Evan Campfield. Luke and Madison trade off lead vocals, and harmonies seamlessly with one another. Their commitment to and keen interest in songwriting brings additional dimensions to the band, allowing the group to appeal to listeners outside of the expected jam-band community.

As a very young band that has already been playing together for a decade, Shadowgrass has a unique bond. “We’ve grown up together and have watched each other evolve into the people we are today”, they say. “It sounds cliche but we definitely act more like siblings than bandmates”. On All That Will, the group explores themes of anxiety and uncertainty, and questioning the people they want to become. Luckily, they’ve had each other to share these experiences with, and it seems that their companionship has only pushed their artistic and musical abilities to new heights.

Larry Campbell & Friends featuring Bill Frisell and Tony Trischka

Buy or sell tickets at face value at CashorTrade.com

‘Legend’ is a horribly overused word, but on Friday, Feb 27th, 2026, in the intimate setting of the Bearsville Theater in Woodstock, NY, three legendary musicians will meet for a wide-ranging evening of music, friendship and exploration. Larry Campbell, Bill Frisell and Tony Trischka, master musicians with deep mutual respect will join onstage for the first time.

This is the first in a planned ‘Larry Campbell and Friends’ series and what a way to kick it off: Bill Frisell, simply one of the most respected guitarists in the world, has collaborated with everyone from Ron Carter to Paul Simon. His recordings and performances run the gamut from small group improvisation to full orchestral settings. The New Yorker wrote “Bill Frisell plays the guitar like Miles Davis played the trumpet: in the hands of such radical thinkers, their instruments simply become different animals.”

Banjoist Tony Trischka is one of those rare artists who’s taken what some consider a ‘primitive’ instrument to places where it has never ventured and, along with pioneers Bill Keith and Bela Fleck, has reinvented the banjo’s repertoire. Tony’s 2024 release “Earl Jam” – nominated by the IBMA for Album of the Yearwhile Tony is nominated for Banjo Player of the Year – features him in the company of Sam Bush, Molly Tuttle and Billy Strings. The New York Times called Tony “…the godfather of what’s sometimes called new acoustic music.”

Larry Campbell has seemingly never met a stringed instrument he hasn’t coveted. Fluent on acoustic and electric guitar, fiddle, mandolin, pedal steel guitar, cittern, dobro and more, Larry has been in demand as a musician, arranger and record producer for decades. He has performed or recorded with Bob Dylan, Sheryl Crow, Tracy Chapman, Keith Richards and Phil Lesh & Friends to name a few. With his wife Teresa Williams, Larry has released four albums of original music. He is a three-time Grammy winner for his productions of Levon Helm and was a central figure in what many consider Bob Dylan’s best band since The Band.

The twenty-two-year-old phenom has commanded festival headlining stages, including Coachella, and opened at MetLife Stadium for The Rolling Stones. TAZ has starred on television and Broadway and has been championed by some of music’s biggest stars. Now, he prepares to unveil his long-anticipated recorded debut. TAZ is currently a touring guitarist with multi-Grammy-winning performer Jon Batiste.

For TAZ, music is a calling. He was inspired at age eight to pick up a guitar after seeing the film *School of Rock*, and just a few years later he was starring in *School of Rock: The Musical* on Broadway. By age sixteen, he had already performed with countless stars—including Lady Gaga, Jon Batiste, Stevie Nicks, Gregg Allman, Quinn XCII, Mac DeMarco, Gary Clark Jr., Derek Trucks, Slash, and The Revivalists—and earned an endorsement from John Mayer as “the first young guitar player that is not a gimmick.”

A live performer like no other—seamlessly slipping between blistering guitar riffs and soulful vocals with carefree charisma—TAZ built an international fan base through extensive touring across the U.S., Europe, Asia, Canada, and the Caribbean. He boasts an engaged social media following and recently capped a headlining tour with sold-out shows at Bowery Ballroom in New York City and venues across the United States.

In collaboration with Grammy-winning producer Theron “Neff-U” Feemster (Justin Bieber, Doja Cat, Kendrick Lamar, Train, Michael Jackson), TAZ has written and recorded a slate of material for his genre-bending debut studio project—one that is sure to captivate his existing fans while drawing in an entirely new audience.

TAZ will graduate from Yale University in May 2025. While attending school, he has continued to expand his acting, musicianship, and multimedia performances in bold, original directions, exploring new creative dimensions. His acting career continues to flourish, most recently landing a role in Sony Pictures’ *Saturday Night*, the major motion picture based on the first episode of *Saturday Night Live*.
